Eligibility for
Admission
Admission to B.A / B.Com Degree Programme is made
under two Regulations:
Regulation-I B.A /
B.Com
For candidates
seeking admission under this regulation no educational qualification is
prescribed. Those who have completed 18 Years of Age on
1st July 2008
(those born on or before 30.06.1990) are eligible to
apply for B.A/B.Com Degree Programme (no relaxation even for one day). All
eligible candidates will be admitted to First Year of the respective
Programmes. The duration of Programme is THREE YEARS.
PROOF OF AGE
(a) Original SSLC/SSC marks card or
Transfer Certificate showing Date of Birth.OR
(b) An extract from the Admission
Register maintained in a school and certified by the Head of the Institution concerned.OR
(c) Birth certificate issued by
Municipality or Local Bodies or any Government or Semi Government
Institutions. OR
(d) Extract from the passport (attested
copies). OR
(e) Horoscope and
Affidavit are not acceptable.
Regulation - II
B.A
Admission to the First Year of Three Year B.A. Degree Programme is open to
candidates who have passed:
(a) The
Two Year Pre-University
examination conducted by the Pre-University Education Board in Karnataka
State; OR
Any other examination considered as equivalent there to. OR
(b) Candidates from other
states who have successfully completed 12 years of schooling (either 10+2 or
11+1 or Higher Secondary Examination - 12 Years of schooling excluding
Nursery education). OR
(c)
Pre
University Examination in Vocational Courses conducted by the Department of
Vocational Education,Government of Karnataka. OR
Regulation - II B.Com
(a) Admission to the First Year of the Three-Year B.Com Degree Programme is open
to candidates who have passed the Two Year Pre-University Examination
conducted by the Board of Pre-University Education in Karnataka State;OR
Any
other Examination considered as equivalent there to; OR
(b) Candidates from other states
who have successfully completed 12 years of schooling (either 10+2 or 11+1
or Higher Secondary Examination - 12 Years of schooling excluding Nursery
education)
(c) Pre-University Education in Vocational Courses
with relevant subject conducted by the Department of Vocational Education,
Government of Karnataka.
Direct Admission to
Second Year B.Com
(b) Candidates who have passed the Three year Diploma in Commercial or
Secretarial Practice conducted by the Department of Technical Education,
Government of Karnataka are eligible for admission to Second Year B.Com.
directly.However, they have to pass language papers and Indian Constitution,
Human Rights and Environmental Studies - (ICHRES) of First year B.Com.
Direct Admission to
Final Year B.Com
(c) Candidates who have passed the Three Year Diploma in Business Administration
conducted by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka
are eligible for admission to Final Year B.Com. However, they have to pass
Language papers and Indian Constitution, Human Rights and Environmental
Studies - (ICHRES) and FCA of First and Second Year B.Com. before completing
Final Year B.Com. Such students will have to compulsorily study and pass all
the papers of Final B.Com., Examination.
Second or Final Year B.A./B.Com Direct
admission (For other University Students)
(1) Candidates seeking enrolment for Second or
Final Year B.A / B.Com Programme shall pay the Tuition Fee not later
than the Date announced in the particular Academic Year. Details of the
payment of fee may be obtained from the respective study centres or from the
University directly.
(2) Candidates seeking admission directly to Second and Final B.A / B.Com will
have to study ICHERS of 1st Year and Fundamentals of Computer Application
of Second B.A / B.Com in addition to the subject in second and final year
B.A respectively and pass the examination.
Candidates
admitted to First Year B.A / B.Com Programme are eligible for promotion to
Second Year even if she/ he fails or not appeared for any or all the
papers of First Year. She/he is eligible for promotion to Final Year if
she/he fails or not appeared for any or all the papers of First Year and
Second Year.
Duration of the Programme
The minimum duration of B.A./B.Com. Programme is Three
Years and maximum duration is Six Years from the Year of Admission.
The Candidates who do not complete the Programme within Six Years will have
to seek fresh admission.
Medium of
Instruction
The medium of instruction followed is English or
Kannada in case of B.A degree Programme, and English only in
the case of B.Com degree programme.
Credit System -
General
The University
follows the ‘Credit system’ for its undergraduate Programmes. Each credit is
of 30 hours of study comprising of all learning activities. Thus, a four
credit course involves 120 study hours, a six credit course involves 180
study hours and so on. This helps the students to understand the
academic efforts she / he has to put in order to successfully
complete the course. Completion of B.A. / B.Com. Programme requires
successfully clearing 90 credits.
Each student of
B.A. Degree Programme shall select two Languages and three Optional
Subjects and ICHRES and student of B.Com. Degree Programme shall select two
Languages and ICHRES and all other Commerce courses.
The
students are expected to complete both the assignments and the term-end
examination of each course in the Programme.
In case the student fails
to submit the assignments in respective academic year she/he will lose
internal assessment (I.A) marks. Such students are examined only in theory
examination. No correspondence is entertained regarding this.

Instructional System
The instructional methodolgy used in this University is different from that of conventional
Universities. The Open Univeristy system is more learner oriented, and is
geared to cater to the needs of motivated students assuming that the student
is an active participant in the teaching-learning process. Instruction to
student is imparted through various modes such as print, audio and supported
by face to face communication during week-end counselling. The University
follows multi-channel approach for instruction.
It comprises

Face-to-Face counselling at study centres by academic counsellors.

Assignments.
a) Bachelors Preparatory Programme
(BPP)
Students who are admitted under
Regulation I (Open University Scheme) will be provided with two blocks of
printed study materials for each of the Languages and Optional courses
selected by them. This is to facilitate the students to familiarize with the
optional subjects and help them to prepare for the B.A./B.Com. Degree
Programme. They must also fulfill the requirement of the regulations
governing B.A./B.Com. Degree programme as prescribed under Regulation I.
Additional details
1. Any candidate who
has not passed Pre-university examination or 10+2 level examination will
have to complete BPP.
2. BPP examination will be held on the
previous day of BA / B.Com Apr/May 2009 Exams at different Examination
Centres. There is no supplementary BPP Examination.
3. The BPP examination will be
conducted for 100 marks (40 marks for language and 60 marks for optional
subjects).
4. Study material in English and
Kannada medium will be handed over to students at the time of admission at
the KSOU headquarters. For others it will be sent by post. Students opting
for B.Com degree programme will get materials in English medium only.
5. For repeaters : Students have to
pay Rs.100/- as Exam Fee in addition to regular exam fee.
b)
Print Material
Print materials are the primary form of instructional
materials, which is in the form of Self Instructional Materials (SIM). These
are supplied to the students in the form of several booklets or blocks. A
block, which comes in the form of booklet comprises several units. The size
of a unit is such that the material given therein may be expected to be
studied by a student in a session of about 5 to 10 hours of study. You are
expected to study thoroughly the print materials, supplied by KSOU. However,
students are also advised to refer to other sources and text books,
suggested under each unit / block in order to get a comprehensive knowledge
of the subject matter.
c) Distribution of
Study material
In tune with its motto of serving the students in the
best possible manner the University has resolved to provide the study
material in the following manner.
1. Study material
will be provided to the students at the head quarters at the time of
admission.
2. Study material
will also be available at all the Regional Centres for which production of
the proof of admission is necessary. The students are advised to make use
of this facility by visiting the Web-site of the University now and then to
know the details.
3. Students who fail
to get the study material at the Head Quarters/Regional Centres will receive
it by post. Students seeking admission at the Head Quarters and at the
Regional Centres should produce Fee paid challan, Identity Card, Despatch
List to procure the reading materials. Reading materials will be issued only
to the bonafide students and not to their representatives.
4. In case of
non-availability of study material, for whatever reason the students
are advised to contact during working hours in person or over phone the
concerned authority. i.e., the Deputy Registrar (Admission) Ph.No.
0821-2500981 and the Deputy Registrar (Lessons) Ph.No. 0821-2500984.
Assignment
Assignment is an integral part of distance learning.
The main purpose of assignment is to test your comprehension of the learning
materials you have received from the University and also to facilitate your
performance.
1. Assignments are
to be submitted before appearing for the term-end Examination. The
Assignments must be submitted during the year of admission. In case a
student fails to submit the assignments he/she will be assessed only for the
theory marks.
2. All assignments
should be submitted at the study centre. Students from outside Karnataka
where there are no KSOU Study Centres, may send the assignments to the
Dean (Study Centres) KSOU, Manasagangotri, Mysore-6.
3. The written
assignment should be complete in all respects. Before submission, you should
ensure that you have answered all the questions. Incomplete answers will
fetch poor grades/marks.
4.
The University has the right to reject the assignment received after due
date. You are therefore, advised to submit the same before the due date.
Evaluation
Procedure
1. Evaluation for
each course covers two aspects :
(a) Internal
assessment (IA) through assignments with a weightage of 10%.
(b) Term-end
examination having a weightage of 90%.
2. Assignment :
In order to be
able to appear for the term-end examination, it is required that the student
submits all the assignments according to the prescribed schedule. In case,
the student has not submitted the assignment within the prescribed date, the
result of such candidate will be declared on the basis of the theory marks
only. Once the result is announced, such candidate is not eligible for
submitting any assignment under any circumstance.
3. Eligibility to
appear for Examination :
To be eligible to
appear at the term-end examination in any course, the students are required
to fulfill the following conditions;.
(a) they should
have paid the Programme / Tuition fee due for that year
(b) they should
have opted and pursued the prescribed Programme
(c) they should
submit the examination form on time
(d) the
admission to the course should have been approved by the University.
4. Examination
Time-table :
Schedule of Examination dates indicating the date and
time of Examination for each programme will be sent to all the Study Centres/Regional
Centres/Examination Centres in one month advance. The students can obtain
the detailed Time-Table from their nearest Regional Centre or Study Centres
or Examination Centre. They can also log on to www.ksoumysore.com. No
individual intimation will be sent to the students regarding Examination
Time Table.
5. See calender of
events for the last date for the payment of examination fee.
6. Students will
appear for the examination only at the Study Centre or at the Examination
Centre allocated to them and not at any other Centre without specific
permission of the Registrar (Examinations).
7. Examination Centre
once opted shall not be changed. If students wish to change, they have to
pay Rs.1000/- and obtain the permission of Registrar (Examination).
8. Centre wise result
will be available with the concerned Study centre / Regional centre.
9. The University
examinations for B.A./B.Com. Degree Programme are held twice a year in
May/June and November/December.
10.
Repeaters
will have to obtain the examination application form on request from the
Registrar (Examination), by First week of March for Apr/May Examinations and
by Second week of August for Supplementary Examinations (November/December).
The Examination Application form will also be available at the Study Centres/Regional
Centres free of cost and can also be down-loaded from the KSOU Website.
11. Examination fee
shall be paid only through SBM /SBI Bank using the Challan provided by KSOU.
Students should write their Name, Roll Number, Programme/Course &
Regulation in the Challan. The students residing in Other States may obtain
D.D in favour of Finance Officer, KSOU, Manasagangotri, payable at Mysore in
any branch of Nationalised Bank. Students are require to mention their Name
and Address, Course, Study Centre opted on the reverse of D.D and enclose
along with filled in application form. Examination fee once paid, will not
be refunded or adjusted to the next examination under any circumstance.
12. Students should
obtain the admission ticket for the examination from the Chief
Superintendent of the examination Centre two days before the commencement of
the examination. Admission ticket will not be sent to the candidates by
post.
13. Marks cards will be
dispatched to the student by Reg/Speed post.
14. Students can answer
examination in Kannada or in English.
15. Candidates
appearing for the examination for the first time shall pay the prescribed
fee for all the papers / courses irrespective of the number of papers /
courses they wish to appear.

Payment of Fees
1. All payments
should be made through SBM /SBI challan provided by KSOU along with the
application form. Payments can also made by D.D in favour of Finance
Officer, KSOU, Manasagangotri, payable at Mysore by students from other
states and from places where SBM/SBI branches are not
located. DDs may be obtained from Nationalised Banks.
2. The prescribed
fees for the Programme should be paid on or before the last date fixed for
submission of application.
3. The application
will be rejected if the payment of fee is not made on or before the last
date fixed by the University. Under no circumstance, the last date will be
extended.
4. Candidates
should submit KSOU supplied SBM/SBI Bank Challan along with filled in
application form.
5. Money orders, IPO,
or any other mode of payment will not be accepted. The University will not
be responsible for the loss incurred due to such payments.
6. Identity Card
bearing Permanent Roll No. will be issued to every student after the
admission is approved. This card must be renewed every year till the
completion of the Programme. In all correspondence with the University the
student quote his/her Roll No. and Programme.
7. Applicants
belonging to States other than Karnataka or who have passed +2 or other
qualifying examination from outside Karnataka will have to pay an
eligibility fee of Rs.1000/- (Both for Regulation I and Regulation II)
8. Student seeking
Direct Admission to Second and Final year B.A/B.Com have to pay Rs.600
and Rs.900/- respectively as Compulsory Course Study

Rules of the University
Candidates admitted to a
Degree Programme in the University will not be permitted to study
simultaneously any other Programme leading to a degree in this or any other
University. However, a candidate can study a Diploma or a Certificate
Programme along with a Degree Programme.
1. If a Candidate
gets admitted to more than one degree Programme, the University shall
cancel the admission to one or both the Programmes.
2. A student who is
found to have concealed information about his/her age, qualification etc.,
or violated any provisions, is liable to be removed from the rolls forthwith
and will be deprived of the benefits of attendance, examination results,
awards etc., in the Programme concerned, apart from appropriate disciplinary
action and imposition of penalties.
3. Students who have discontinued
their studies after passing the First Year Examination of B.A / B.Com
Programme or after passing the Second year Examination of BA/B.Com programme
in a department/college affiliated to any recognized University, are
eligible for admission to the Second year, Final year of study in this
University in the concerned subject, as per the regulations prescribed by
the University on payment of enrollment fee of Rs.600/-. Such candidates
should enclose with the application form:
(i) Application
for obtaining Transfer Certificate in original from the College last
studied.
(ii) Original

(iii) Prior
permission from KSOU.

Candidates
shall abide by the Rules and Regulations in force and those to be issued by
the University from time to time.
6. All legal disputes will come
under the jurisdiction of Mysore city courts.
7. The offices of the University and
Library will remain closed on the Second Saturdays of every month, all
Sundays and General Holidays.

This Prospectus provides
necessary information required by a student. Hence students are advised to
keep the prospectus till completion of the Programme.
9. To obtain the
Degree Certificate after passing the examination, a student should directly
apply to the Registrar (Examination), Karnataka State Open University,
Manasagangotri, Mysore-6, in the prescribed application form. Other
details may be obtained from the University after the press notification
about convocation.
10. To obtain the
Migration Certificate a student should apply to the Registrar
(Examination), KSOU, Manasagangotri, Mysore- 570 006, in the
prescribed form by paying the prescribed fee.
11. Transfer
Certificate will not be issued to the student. It will be sent to the
institution where the student pursues his/her further studies. However, the
students have to obtain No Due Certificate from the University before
applying for Transfer Certificate/Migration Certificate. It wil not be
issued for purposes other than further studies. To know the formalities for
obtaining T.C please contact the Deputy Registrar (Admissions) in person or
over phone (Ph.No. 2500981).
12. Provisional Pass
Certificate will be issued by the Registrar (Examination) on request and
on payment of prescribed fee, after the declaration of result by the
University.
13. The University will
send study materials by Registered Post. All circulars, letters,
examination notifications and such other correspondences will be sent
by ordinary post only. The candidate can also collect the above except study
materials from the nearest study centre or from head quarters.,
14. B.P.P is compulsory
for B.A/B.Com and M.P.P is compulsory for M.A/M.Com for those who seek
admission under Regulation-1
