M.A. AND M.Com. DEGREE PROGRAMMES
 

         Eligibility for Admission

Admission to M.A/ M.Com Degree Programmes  is made under two Regulations:

Regulation- I

Candidates who have not studied the cognate subject in the (three years) bachelors' degree programmes are  eligible to seek admission to any Post Graduate degree programme under Regulation-I, provided such candidates shall qualify in the Master Preparatory Programme (M.P.P) Examination in the concerned subject  conducted by the University.

Regulation- II

A pass in the qualifying examination i.e., (B.A/ B.Com/B.B.M) for admission to M.A/ M.Com is one of the conditions of eligibility in the case of candidates applying under Regulation II. Subjectwise details are given below :

1)  M.A Kannada

     Admission is open to :

     (a)   Candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/ B.Sc/ B.A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Kannada as a Major/ Optional subject at the Degree level OR an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

     (b)   Candidates who have passed the Kannada Pandit Examination conducted by the Government of Karnataka.

     (c)  Candidates who have passed the B.Ed Degree Examination of any University after passing SSLC and also Vidwan Examination in Kannada of Madras University.

     (d)   Graduates with Post-Pre-University Diploma in Kannada of any University.

    (e)  Candidates who have passed the three year B.A/B.Sc/B.Com degree examination offering Kannada as second language or as a minor subject at the degree level provided they have obtained not less than 50% of the maximum marks in the above language / subject.

2)  M.A English

     Admission is open to:

     (a)   Candidates who have passed three Year B.A/B.Sc/B.A(Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering English as a Major/Optional subject at the Degree level OR an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

     (b)   Candidates who have passed the Three Years B.A/B.Sc/B.Music Degree Examination offering English as Second Language or as a Minor subject at the Degree level are also eligible, provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of the maximum marks in the above language/subject.

     (c)  Candidates who have passed the Four Year B.A.Ed Degree Examination of the University of Mysore (Regional College Scheme) with English as Major/Optional.

   (d) Candidates who have passed Four Year B.A.Ed or B.Sc.Ed of University of Mysore(Regional College scheme),provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of marks in Language English.

     (e)    Graduates of any University who have passed Post-Graduate Diploma in English.

3) M.A Hindi

     Admission is open to:

     (a)   Candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.Sc/B.A(Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Hindi as a Language Under Group-I or Group-II. Provided they have obtained not less than 50% of marks in language Hindi & 40 % in Optionals.

or

     (b)    Candidates who have passed a degree of any University recognized as equivalent thereto with Hindi as Optional    or as Major subject.

or

     (c)    Graduates of any recognized University and if the candidate is not studied either Hindi as Language or as Optional then the following examinations will be treated as equivalent to Language and Optional Hindi (But the Candidate must be a Graduate of a recognized University) one of the following Hindi Examinations:-

                i.    Rashtrabhasha Praveen or Rashtrabhasha Vishard Examination of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachara Sabha, Chennai.

                ii.   Rashtrabhasha Vidwan or Rajabhasha Prakash Examination of Karnataka Hindi Prachara Samithi, Bangalore.

                iii.   Hindi Ratna Examination of the Mysore Hindi Prachara Parishat, Bangalore.

                iv.   Bhasha Praveen Examination of the Karnataka Mahila Hindi seva samithi, Bangalore.

                v.    Sahitya Vishard i.e., Sahitya Madhyama or Uttama i.e., Sahitya Ratna (with Hindi Sahitya) of the Hindi   Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag.

4)  M.A URDU

     Admission is open to:

     a.     Candidates who have passed Three Year B.A /B.Sc / Degree Examination of any recognized University offering URDU as a Major/Optional subject at the Degree level OR an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

     b.     Candidates who have passed the Three Year B.A/B.Sc /B.Com Degree Examination offering Urdu as Second Language or as a Minor subject at the Degree level, provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of the maximum marks in the above language / subject.

5)   M.A SANSKRIT

      Admission is open to:

     a.   Candidates who have passed Three Year B.A. /B.Sc /B.A(Performing Arts)  Degree Examination of any recognized University offering SANSKRIT as a Major/Optional subject at the Degree level OR an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

    b.    Candidates who have passed the Three Year B.A /B.Sc/B.Com/B.Music/ BYNS/ BBM/ Fiveyears BAMS/ LLB Degree Examination offering Sanskrit as Second Language or Minor subject at the Degree level, provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of the maximum marks in the above language / subject.

    c.    Graduates of any recognized University who have passed at least the Sahitya Examination conducted by the Board of Sanskrit Education, Govt. of Karnataka, Bangalore or any other Examination considered equivalent thereto such as Kavida of Bharatiya Vidyabhavan Bombay, 'Kovida' of Sanskrit Bharati, New Delhi, Samartha of Bhasa Pracarinisabha, Chittoor.

    d.   Graduates of any recognized University, who have passed the Post-Pre-University Diploma Examination in Sanskrit conducted by any University.

     e.    Candidates who have passed the Vidwat Madhyama Examination conducted by the Board of Sanskrit Education. Karnataka Government.

     f.     Graduates of any university recognized as equivalent thereto who have passed the Kannada Pandit Examination conducted by the Government of Karnataka.

6)         M.A. HISTORY

     Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.A(Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering History as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto.

7)         M.A. ECONOMICS

        Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A. /B.Sc. /B.A(Performing Arts)  Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Economics as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto.

8)         M.A. POLITICAL SCIENCE

        Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.Sc /B.A(Performing Arts)  Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Political Science and Public Administration as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto.

9)         M.A. PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

        Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.Sc /B.A(Performing Arts)  Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Political Science and Public Administration as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

10)        M.A. SOCIOLOGY

        Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A /B.A(Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Sociology as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto.

11)        M.A. MASS COMMUNICATION AND JOURNALISM

        Admission to M.A M.C.J (Previous) is open to graduates of any recognised University.  Admission to M.A. M.C.J (Final) year through lateral entry is open for candidates who have passed one year P.G.Diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism Programme of KSOU or any other recognised University / Institution. Students who successfully complete first year MA MCJ  and opt for lateral exit are eligible to receive a PG Diploma in MCJ. For details visit                           www.ksoumysore.com.

12)        M.A. PSYCHOLOGY

        (a) B.A. / B.Sc, graduates who have studied Psychology as one of the optional subjects are eligible for admission for M.A. Psychology programme of K.S.O.U.

        (b)  Candidates with professional qualifiction like M.D. or D.PM (Psychiatry) Para Medical Courses like Nursing, Speech and Hearing; M.A/M.Sc in Social work; B.Sc/M.Sc in Physiotherapy; B.Sc/M.Sc. Home Science/ Food and Nutrition; M.Sc Human Development; B.Sc/M.Sc. Psychiatric Nursing who have studied Psychology as a cognate subject and B.Ed., M.Ed., and M.P.Ed. who have studied Psychology or Educational Psychology as a cognate subject and similar other degrees are also as eligible for admission.

13)        M.COM

        Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.Com /B.B.M Degree Examination of any recognized University or an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto.

NOTE :  Candidates seeking admissions to Second Year M.A./M.Com. directly by transfer from any other University will have to buy the prospectus and submit fresh application and the admission is subject to approval by the EquivalenceCommittee of KSOU.

     Admission to Final Year M.A/M.Com

    Those students who have completed Previous MA/M.Com Programmes in KSOU need not apply afresh for Final Year M.A./M.Com Programme. They shall pay the prescribed Programme / tuition fee after receiving circular/instructions from the University/Regional centres.  They may continue their studies in the Final Year (i) irrespective of their result of the M.A/M.Com (Previous) Examination or (ii) even if they have not appeared for the Previous Examination.

Medium of Instruction

    The medium of instruction followed is English and Kannada except for languages and for M.Com Programme, the medium of instruction in English.  However, candidates are permitted to write the Term-end Examination either in Kannada or English.

Duration of the Programme

    The minimum duration of the M.A/M.Com. Programme is ‘Two’ years and the maximum duration is ‘Four’ years from the year of Admission to the Programme. The candidate who fails to complete the Programme within four years will have to seek fresh admission.

           Under open distance system, a paper is called "Course" and a course as "Programme". There are five Courses for the first year and five for the Second Year Post Graduate Programme.

Personal contact programme:           Students admitted to M.A  Mass Communication and Journalism programme are required to attend a five day contact programme in Mysore each year which is compulsory.  Exact date and place of the programme will be intimated to the students individually.                                                            100 marks of internal assessment comprises of 50 marks for test (conducted during compulsory contact programs) and 50 marks for practical assignments. Practical assignment will be allotted to students at the time of contact program.

Special Note:                                    Students who do not submit the practical assignments within the given deadline are not eligible to appear for the main theoryexams. If they appear for Exams violating this regulation, the results will be nullified.  Any requisitions or letter correspondents in this connection will not be entertained.

          Instructional System

       The Instructional methodology used in this University is different from conventional Universities.  The Open University system is more learner-oriented, and is geared to cater to the needs of motivated students assuming that the student is an active participant in the teaching-learning process. Instruction to students is imparted through various modes such as Print, Audio-video, and supported by face to face interaction known as Contact Programme.

        The University follows multi-channel approach for instruction.  It comprises proportionate combination of:

  •           Printed Self-instructional Material - Audio Cassettes

  •           Audio Programmes transmitted through Radio.

  •           Short term Contact Programme by University Professors

  •           Viva - Voce / Assignments

 

 

           Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP)

            Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP) is compulsory for students admitted under Regulation-I. The students will be supplied with master lessons in 10 blocks giving a bird’s eye view of the cognate subject in which they are admitted to Master’s Degree Programme. Further details are as follows.

            a)    Graduates who have not studied cognate subject and taken admission  for M.A / M.Com  Programmes are required to undergo MPP Examination.

            b)   The Candidates will be supplied 10 Blocks of lessons at the  time of admission. These lessons containes               information about the cognate subject which they have choosen for M.A / M.Com Degree.

            c)    MPP Examination will be held on the eve of the M.A/M.Com examinations, 2009. Total marks will be  100 for the subjects of M.A / M.Com degree course. 

           d)   MPP Study enhances the knowledge of the students besides increasing job opportunities. This Course is      introduced  to bring in All India Standard for MA/M.Com degree offered under Open University Scheme.     

            e)   Candidates applying for MA-MCJ under Regulation - I need not appear for MPP if they have passed Diploma in Journalism course from KSOU or any recognised University or Institute.

           Distribution of Study materials

            In tune with its motto of serving the students in the best possible manner the University has resolved to provide the study material in the following manner.

               1.       Study material will be provided to the students at the headquarters/Regional Centres at the time of admission.

             2.      Study material will also be available at all the Regional Centres on producing the proof of admission.  The students are advised to make use of this facility.

               3.       Students who fail to get the study material at the headquarters/Regional Centres will  receive it by post.

              4.       In addition to the above, KSOU will make arrangements to reach the study material to the students by hand   wherever possible (in areas having large number of students).

              5.      In case of non-availability of study material, for whatever reason, the students are advised to contact the concerned authority i.e Deputy Registrar (Admissions) and Deputy Registrar (Lessons).

            Personal Contact Programme 

        University conducts Personal Contact Programme of five days duration at selected centres. Students can attend the PCP at the centres of their choice and have the benefit. Students can have more information on PCP from the Regional Centre / Study Centre. During the personal contact programme, Lectures/ counselling will be delivered by the faculty of various Universities besides the inhouse staff of KSOU. At the end of the Contact Programme, viva-voce is arranged where  each student will  be examined for 10 marks in each paper as part of the Internal Assessment.

            Internal Assessment

       Internal Assessment is an integral part of Distance Learning.  The main purpose of Internal Assessment is to access your comprehension of the learning materials, you have received from the University and also to help you for better comprehend the Courses by providing feed back to you.

     To facilitate the distance learners Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) has introduced dual mode of Internal Assessment

         a. Attending Viva - Voce at the end of Contact Programme.

        b. Submission of Home Assignments for those who are residing outside Karnataka and those who are unable to attend the Contact Programme for various reasons.

        c. At the end of Contact Programme, Viva - Voce will be arranged in respective Centres where the students will be examined by their teachers for 10 marks in each paper. Those who are unable to attend the Viva - Voce at the end of Contact Programme  may submit assignments to the Department Chairman of your chosen subject.  The questions for assignments are available only on the KSOU website (www.ksoumysore.com).  No separate intimation will be sent regarding the assignment questions individually.   

        The Assignments should be sent to the Chairman of concerned Department, KSOU, Manasagangotri, Mysore  through Registered Post. 

        The Last date for Submission of Assignments is 31st March 2009.        

                

     Re- Totalling & Challenge Valuation

     Students will be permitted to apply for Re-Totalling of Marks in respect of different papers  of M.A/ M.Com. (Previous and Final) Examinations, within a month after the publication of the results. Students can apply for challange valuation by paying a fee of Rs. 1000/- Per Course. Application should be submitted within 30 days after the declaration of result.

     Re-Appearance

     A candidate declared to have failed in the Master’s Degree Examination (Previous or Final) is Permitted to   re-appear for Previous OR Final OR both provided that:

      i)      The number of  chances be restricted to four including the first appearance to be  utilized within Four Years from the year of admission.

      ii)     Such chances will be given as per the syllabus and scheme of examination in force on the date of such subsequent appearance.

      Improvement of Class

     A candidate declared to have passed the Master Degree Examination (Previous OR  Final) is permitted to re-appear for the examination (All the Papers/Courses of Previous OR Final OR Both)  without rejecting the results so obtained for the purpose of improving the results and  finally choose themarks/results  of that examination or the earlier one to his / her advantage, provided that :

      i)      The number of such chances for re-appearance shall be restricted to three to be utilized  within four years from the date of admission

      ii)   The application for such re-appearance shall be made to the Registrar (Evaluation) atleast 60 days before the commencement of the Examination and obtain permission. The Examination  Fee for such appearance should be paid only after the permission is accorded to the candidate.

      Scheme of Evaluation

     There will be double valuation for all the Papers / Courses of M.A. / M.Com. Previous and Final. If the difference between the marks of the two valuations is 21% or more, such scripts will be referred to the Third valuation.

      Examination Centres

    University will conduct M.A./M.Com. Examinations at Centres where more than 50 Students per subject appear for Examination. The detailed time table of Examinations and the Centres will be put on the University Website.

      Other Information

         1)    To be eligible to appear at the term-end examination in any Programme, the students are required to fulfil the following conditions:

                  *   they should have paid the Programme / tuition fee for that year

                  *   they should have opted and pursued the prescribed Programme

                  *    they should submit the examination form in time

                  *   their registration for the Programme should be valid.

         2)     Examination schedule indicating the date and time of examination for each Programme is  sent to all the Study Centres/Regional Centres/Examination Centres one - month in advance. The students can obtain the detailed Time - Table from their nearest Regional Centre or Study Centre or Examination Centre.  They can also log on to www. ksoumysore.com.  No individual intimation will be sent to the students regarding Examination Time table.

         3)    Details of examination schedule can be obtained 15 days before the commencement of the examination, from Study Centres/Regional Centres/Headquarters indicating their Enrollment No., Name, Address and Programme.

         4)     Students will be entitled to appear for the examination only at  the examination centre allocated to them and not at any other centre without specific  permission of the University.

          5)     Centre once opted shall not be changed.

       6)    Examination result will be compiled according to examination centrewise and all the concerned Study Centres/Regional Centres/Examination Centres will get a copy of  the result.

         7)     Candidates who fail to complete the Programme within the allocated period of study shall cease to be on the Rolls of the University for that Programme.

          8)    Examinations for M.A. and M.Com. Programme will be held once a year in May /June.        

          9)    Examination application forms will be sent from KSOU along with lesson to the students. 

         10)  Repeaters will have to obtain the examination application form on request from the Registrar (Evaluation), by First week of March for May /June  examination. The Examination  Application form  will also be available at the Regional Centres/Study Centres at free of  cost, and also can be downloaded from KSOU website.

         11)    Examination fee shall be paid only through Challan provided by KSOU.  Fees shall be paid by D.D in favour of The Finance Officer, Manasagangotri, payable at Mysore, where branches of SBM/SBI does not exist and also students residing outside the Karnataka State only. Students should mention on the reverse of the D.D His / Her name, Subject, and Roll Number without fail. They are required to keep the copy of the D.D.

          12)  Students should obtain the admission ticket for the examination from the Chief Superintendent of the Examination  Centre two days earlier to the Examination date. Admission ticket will not be sent directly by post.

          13)   Marks Cards will be dispatched to the students by the University to the address of the student by Post.

          14)   English medium students can answer examination in Kannada also.

          15)  Candidate appearing for examination for the first time shall pay the full-prescribed fee.  The Examination fee structure  is given below.

            Payment of Fees

       All payments will be by the form KSOU '200' General Fund Challan payable at Branches of State Bank of Mysore or State Bank of India respectively.

        1.     Prescribed fees for the programme should be paid on or before the last date fixed for submission of application.

        2.    Application will be rejected if the payment of fee is not made on or before the last date fixed by the university. Under no circumstance, this date will be extended.

        3.    Programme/tuition fee has to be credited to the Karnataka State Open University through KSOU Bank Challan only along with filled in application. 

        4.    Students are required to preserve carefully the Challan Copy of the fee paid Challan for all payments made to the University. They will have to produce this copy at the time of obtaining examination admission ticket, marks cards and other documents. The copy of the Challan is the only valid document. Other documents about the remittance of programme/tuition fee will not be accepted.

        5.    Money orders, IPO, or any other mode of payment will not be accepted. University will not be responsible for the loss incurred due to such payments.

        6.    Identity Card bearing Permanent Roll No. will be issued to every student after the admission is approved. This card must be renewed every year till the completion of the programme. In all correspondence with the University student shall quote her/his Roll No. and programme.

            7.     All Applicants belonging to States other than Karnataka or passed their Degree or other       

          Rules of the University

           1.       No Candidate is permitted to pursue two degree programmes simultaneously of this or any other University.

         2.      If a candidate gets admitted to more than one post graduate or degree programme, the University shall cancel his/her admission to one of the programmes, which she/he had joined without giving prior notice.

         3.     Any student who is found to have concealed information about her/his age, qualification etc. or violated any provisions, is liable to be removed from the rolls forthwith and will be deprived of the benefits of attendance, examination, results, awards etc., in the programme concerned, apart from appropriate disciplinary action and imposition of penalties.

           4      Students who have discontinued their studies after passing the M.A. / M.Com. Previous Examination from another Department/College affiliated to any recognised University, are eligible for admission to the Final Year M.A./M.Com. in this University in the concerned subject, as per the regulations prescribed by the University on a payment of a prescribed fee. Such candidates should buy the prospectus and submit fresh application. Such candidates should enclose with the application form:

  •  The application for obtaining Transfer Certificate in original from the college last studied. 

  •  The original statement of marks issued by the University, and

  •   Prior permission from the University.

  •   The application should be accepted by the equivalence committee of the University.

          5.      Candidates shall abide by the Rules and Regulations in force and those to be issued by the University from time to time. 

           6.       False declaration of Age, Qualification etc., by the candidate will disqualify her/his admission to the University. 

           7.       Any/All Legal Disputes shall be subjected to the jurisdiction of Mysore City courts only.

          8.      The offices of the University will remain closed on the Second Saturdays of every month, all Sundays and General Holidays.

         9.      This prospectus provides all necessary information you need as a student of the University. You are therefore advised to keep the prospectus till you complete your Programme. Avoid unnecessary correspondence about the details provided in this prospectus.

        10.    To receive the Degree Certificate after passing the examination, a student should directly apply to the Registrar (Evaluation), Karnataka State Open University, Manasagangotri, Mysore-6, in the prescribed application form.  Other details may be obtained from the University after the press notification about the convocation.

         11.    To obtain the Migration Certificate a student should apply to The Registrar (Evaluation), KSOU, Manasagangotri, Mysore-6, in the prescribed form or by paying the Prescribed fee.

        12.     Transfer Certificate will not be issued to the student.  It will be sent to the institution where the student pursues her/his further studies. However, the students have to obtain No Due Certificate from the University before applying for Transfer Certificate/Migration Certificate.

         13.    Provisional Pass Certificate will be issued by The Registrar (Evaluation) on request and on payment of prescribed fee, after the declaration of result by the University.

         14.     If the Original Identity card is lost, duplicate card may be obtained from the office on Payment of Rs.100/- through KSOU General Fund account in State Bank of Mysore or State Bank of India through prescribed Bank Challan respectively.
